Digital Detox
I know it sounds scary but it can be such a beneficial move for your emotional, mental and physical well being.
We are connected to our phones almost 100% of the time. We regularly check it for email messages, text and social media posts. It’s used as a camera to capture special moments and it acts as an alarm clock that we swipe to snooze each morning (It’s ok, we all do it :). This is why, a detox is necessary to allow ourselves to recenter and be present to the world and people around us.
What does this look like? Great question. It’s limiting our screen time. This could include the following:
Checking Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok or whatever sites you visit frequently at a specific time each day and for a specific length of time.
Keeping your phone facedown while you work or around others.
When work is done and it’s time to be present, leave the phone in another part of the house so you aren’t tempted to scroll.
Use an actual alarm clock versus your phone to wake you up.
Start your day with gratitude exercises, your morning beverage of choice and a walk in the morning sun for at least 15 minutes. Then grab your phone and check what needs to be checked or responded to.
Be sure to avoid all screen time at least 2 hours prior to when you normally go to bed. Grab a book instead, lower the lightning and temp in the room and just relax.
I would also recommend choosing a day each week in which you spend zero time in apps, social media, emails, text or your calendar. This could be something you do once a month or once a week. That is up to you. You can even set parameters on your phone so that if a family member or friend with an emergency comes up you can answer them but all other messages will be muted.
